How I Work
I work with clients in two ways, depending on the project and the relationship.
Monthly retainer. For ongoing work — maintenance, continuous improvements, new features, automations. A fixed monthly fee for a defined number of hours. Ideal when you need a senior developer available without hiring one full-time. Most of my long-term clients work this way, and it's what I recommend for any collaboration expected to last more than a couple of months.
Project-based, phased. For projects with a defined outcome, I work in phases. Each phase has its own scope, its own timeline, and its own closed price.
- Discovery phase (paid, 10-20 hours). I explore the system, understand the business logic, identify hidden dependencies and risks. You get a written report with what I found, what I recommend, and where the real risks live.
- Phase planning in Taiga. Based on Discovery, I build a detailed timeline in a shared project board (Taiga, free and open source). You see every task, every estimate, and every dependency before we start coding.
- Phase-by-phase execution. Each phase has its own closed price. At the end of each phase, you decide if we continue. If something unexpected appears during a phase, we discuss it before proceeding — never after.
How I handle the unexpected. Software always has unknowns. No honest developer can promise zero surprises. What I promise is this: you'll never be surprised by an extra charge after the fact. Anything not in the plan is discussed and approved before I touch it. If we discover a problem that requires more work, we either adjust the scope of that phase or open a new one. Either way, you know the cost before I start.
What working with me looks like:
- We start with a 15-minute call. No cost, no commitment.
- I ask questions, understand the problem, and tell you honestly if I'm the right fit.
- If Discovery makes sense, we start there. If not, I'll tell you.
- No open-ended projects. No hourly surprises. No work that shows up in an invoice you didn't expect.
